Functional hand built pottery is my creative release. As an engineer I am always thinking about how I could make a piece better or faster but then I sit in front of a piece of leather hard clay and all I want to do is carve. Using sgraffito techniques I carve in clay the same motifs I doodle in the margins of my engineering notes–petals and waves and clouds and leaves. When I make a piece, I think about how it will look as a serving piece. I like when food covers the design and invites you to guess what is behind that tomato or under that cookie.
I love looking at ceramic art and taking workshops to learn new techniques. I joined the MCAA board to bring more educational opportunities to Michigan ceramic artists and to build a community of artists who share this passion.
