Detroit based artist, Kelly Kaatz, has been honing her skills in functional ceramics
since 2012. Originally a sculptor and metalsmith with a BFA degree from Wayne
State university, Kelly applies the skillset she acquired to her ceramic practice to
create sculptural, hand built works from clay. Her pots embody abstract scenes
from nature and are filled with texture, uneven lines and whimsical flow.
“In my practice I try to bring something new to this ever evolving craft. I
developed a hand building technique that lets me create large organic shaped
vessels with thin, wet clay slabs. My enjoyment comes from altering forms just
right to make the experience with the piece more enjoyable for everyday use.
Pushing the boundaries between function and sculpture, while consistently
maintaining comfortable works.”
