For me, pottery should be functionally beautiful. Historically, pottery was invented 20,000 years ago to be used for every day functionality. Eventually the process evolved into also making beautiful creations of art. Don’t get me wrong, I love an art piece as much as any collector, but I create pottery to be useable. I would much rather have someone buy a bowl from me and put Thanksgiving mashed potatoes in it than sit it on a shelf to be looked at. I strive for my pottery to be both functional and beautiful.
